The Fieri

The Fieri

One of the four elven Kindoms, the Fieri inhabit the south-central to south-west regions of Faeran known as the Grasslands. Their territory lies between the Remsgri forests to the west, the Turi mountains of Ard Gael to the east, and Lake Orhirion to the north, which separates the Grasslands from the Morcani-inhabited Lay Hills. Fertile soil, a mild climate, and relatively flat terrain enable the Fieri to live prosperously in most parts of the Grasslands, though few make their home in the ever-shifting river channels that make up the western portion of the region: the Braided River.

The Fieri are dark-skinned with black or brown hair worn in a wide range of styles. Self expression is highly valued among the Fieri, manifesting in sometimes outlandish hair-styles, jewelry, clothing, and tattoos. Some Fieri wear their hair in tight braids, others loose but with braids twisting through it or bound half-up. Both men and women may shave their heads, or cut their hair short, especially in the countryside.

The Fieri elves are dark-skinned and wear bold colors and patterns.

While most elves of all Kindoms bear some form of tattoos, it is not uncommon for the Fieri to cover large portions of their skin in inked art signifying everything from their family, to where they are from, to their talents and occupations, to symbols of worship. Tattoos are seen as artful labels of who a person is, a sort of brand of identity.

Fieri fashion consists of bold colors and patterns. Clothing is worn loose and is most often made of cotton or hemp, revealing the arms, belly, or legs. In the cooler months and northern regions of the Grasslands, mohair and leather are common. Wraps, sashes, and jewelry form an outlet for further adornment and expression among the Fieri.

The Fieri are brilliant chemists. They invented solar power and specialize in the production of pigmented paints, inks, and dyes. The rich soil of the Grasslands enables the Fieri to farm grains, fruits, and vegetables for themselves and for trade, but the Fieri are also known for their ingenious crop fertilization and pest management formulas deriving from minerals and elements. The Fieri are also the biggest exporter of textiles on Faeran.

Fieri religion is colorful, outgoing, and public. Song and dance weave Fieri faith through the fabric of their everyday lives, including common phrases of speech and proverbs. They literally wear their faith on their skin, and worship in the same way they approach personal appearance—individually and uniquely, with no shame or hesitation. The Fieri emphasize connection with the four spirits of the world: terra, water, flame, and ether. They are linked most strongly with terra spirits, drawing inspiration from them for their fighting style, design, and architecture.

Telem Fier and the Grasslands

Telem Fier is the Great City of the Fieri lands. It is flat and sprawling, with low buildings and wide streets. The city lies along the eastern banks of the Braided River. Though much of the city is made of plain stone and wood, Telem Fier is a vibrant place, with painted doors, colorful fabrics draped over windows and awnings, and even more colorful clothing worn by its inhabitants. A permanent spice hangs in the air from a combination of flavorful Fieri cuisine and a penchant to leave doors open in public and private buildings alike, and music is an almost constant background noise on any street or square.

Solar panels are built into most roofs in Telem Fier. The low, flat buildings and ample sun of the Grasslands makes for a consistent and strong source of power for the Great City. Wide streets allow for roomy levit paths, and the city’s Rale station is only inferior to that in Remsgraen itself—home to the technology’s inventors. The Braided River offers access to the Semestrial Sea, the waterway leading through the primary Fieri port city of Calafor, south of Telem Fier.

Like all the Great Cities, Telem Fier suffered damage during the Great War, and was host to several prominent battles. A protective wall was erected around the city’s lengthy borders toward the beginning of the war, and still stands today.

The large size of the Grasslands, along with its borders against lakes, rivers, mountains, and coastline, creates a broad range of climates. Telem Fier experiences hot, dry summers and mild winters, while Rone, on the northern border along the banks of the Orhiri River, receives far more precipitation year-round and near-freezing temperatures in the winter.

The Grasslands are home to a vast diversity of wildlife, most notably megafauna such as aurochs, buval, wildcats, and boars. Fieri cities and villages often clump together, forming swaths of wilderness between disturbed only by Rale lines and the occasional hunter.
